Is there a way to play music either .mp3 or .wav files without
installing quicktime?
(A windows solution is mainly needed)

FolderItem.OpenAsSound works on .wav files on Mac and Windows.

thanks Lars, I didn't realize that functionality for some reason I have
been using movie.play which is what got me into trouble with the
Windows users

I would recommend Frank C's wonderful FMOD wrappers available at

Hi Asher

Lars mentioned that you could just use openassound, like

Dim f as FolderItem

f=GetFolderItem("Music").Child(Songs(Index).Text)

If f <> NIL and f.Exists Then
backmusic = f.OpenAsSound
backmusic.playLooping
end if

and the docs say that wav files will be played even if QT is not
installed.

I'll check FMOD

Ah. I was not aware of the Quicktime independence. FMOD provides full
3D audio support, and support for lots and lots of file formats :-)

Using an FMOD memory stream with OGG or MP3 audio is probably the best
option for background music. With OpenAsSound you simply don't know
what you're getting. Is the entire uncompressed audio in memory? (bad
for long sounds, e.g. music) Is it streamed from disk? (bad for
performance).

FMOD has some licensing hassles, but it's perfectly tuned for games.

Frank.
