[ANN] 3DMF Workshop v0.5d
Date: 13.07.05 21:40 (Wed, 13 Jul 2005 16:40:29 -0400)
From: Frank Condello
3DMF Workshop in an open source REALbasic application that imports 3D
models in OBJ or 3DS format and exports 3DMF files suitable for use
with Rb3D and Quesa. Models can be optimized and re-oriented as
needed, and the built-in material system supports drag-and-drop
texturing and interactive editing of 3DMF attributes such as diffuse/
transparent colors and specularity.

New in version 0.5d:
- OBJ loader is more forgiving when loading files that contain empty
groups or no groups at all (e.g. Maya files).
- There is now visual feedback in the 3D viewer when a mesh is
selected in the options palette.
- Generic3DModel can now return vertex arrays of a particular
endianess making it easier to write exporters for binary formats.

This is a developer (source-only) release and is available here:
3DMFWorkshop_05d.zip>. The project requires RB 5.5 or higher, with
the PNG Utilities plugin: <http://developer.chaoticbox.com/>.
Quicktime is required on Win32 to open all registered image types
(PNG and BMP will work without it however).

Please note that as of version 0.5, 3DMF Workshop works best with a
custom build of Quesa (included in the download). This build simply
changes the OpenGL point size from (a rather useless) size of 1, to a
size of 4. That's it. 3DMF Workshop will still work with other Quesa
builds, but mesh selection may not be visible. The Mac Carbon build
of Quesa included in the download needs to be decompressed with
Stuffit (it's a SIT within the ZIP) a Win32 DLL is also included.

Thanks,
Frank.

Great!

Thanks for supporting that!

(wonders if Frank could be coerced into making a full blown modeler out
of this...

How would I go about loading a 3DMF object (or an object3D, already
loaded into RB) into 3DMF workshop and setting it up as a quesaObject?

If your coercion involves FedEx'ing me buckets of money then I'll
consider it ;)

Honestly, I have no interest in making a modeler out of this, or
otherwise. There are plenty of free/cheap (and expensive) modelers
already available, and already better than anything I could come up
with.

Frank.

Depends on what you mean by quesaObject. That's a Quesa Wrappers
class that is the base for all other "quesa objects" and is useless
on its own...

If you want to load 3DMFs, you should add an Import3DMF extension to
the Generic3DFormat3DS module, then load the 3DMF into an Object3D
and use the Quesa Wrappers to grab relevant data and convert it into
a Generic3DModel instance. Don't try to bypass Generic3DModel, 'cause
the exporter doesn't care if your data was 3DMF to begin with, or
even what's in the Rb3DSpace - it simply converts a Generic3DModel to
3DMF from scratch, and an importer should simply do the reverse.

Frank.

Yes and no. There are very few (inexpensive) modelers on Mac targeted
for low poly modeling for games.

I'm not against sending you a modestly sized bucket of money though.
Perhaps if enough like minded people sent buckets also...
