For the record and for anyone else who ever sees this post in the Archive,
here is what fixed the RB/MySQL 5.0 compatibility issue, as David specified
and as documented on
http://forums.mysql.com/read.php?11,6400,66337#msg-66337:

Reset the password to pre-4.1 style for each user that needs to use a
pre-4.1 client program [RB, that is]. This can be done using the SET
PASSWORD statement and the OLD_PASSWORD() function [at the MySQL Command
Line Client, as follows]:

mysql> SET PASSWORD FOR
-> 'some_user'@'some_host' = OLD_PASSWORD('newpwd');
