Thanks for the suggestion, (which I guess was passed along from Joe Strout
originally) - of double buffering the stringshape so it doesn't print all black.
It works! So thats good. However, its super pixelatted - with giant pebble
pixels. I hope they will fix that in the future so it looks a bit more
professional. I am replacing something that used to be done in Excel, and its prints
sideways with full resolution and looks great.

Well, that's to be expected if you generate your pixel map at 72 dpi.
Make a bigger picture, draw a bigger string, and then scale your
picture down when you draw it.

You can make it look professional either way. But I hope they fix it
so such work-arounds aren't needed. Using the QuickDraw print
architecture, there was no easy way to avoid it, but my understanding
is that under OS X, printing can now go directly through Quartz. So
I'm not sure why you wouldn't be able to print a string at any
rotation, just as a string.

Best,

Greg -

Years ago I made some picts of forms. I had the same problem of pixellation
of the characters when I tried to turn some of the text sideways. To solve
it I left each letter of the text vertical, but put a carriage return after
each letter instead. In other words, the text was not turned sideways at
all, but the shape was still vertical with each letter below the previous
one. I adjusted the vertical "kerning" by changing the line spacing. The
text stayed sharp, not pixellated.
