how can i make the dvd rom drive code free?
for users in US: DVD use region codes which will not allow us european
to look at american DVDs sold in US. you can change the code 5 times,
then it is fixed.
normal DVD players can be bought code-free, but not the powerbook

google for it ;-)

Seen many patches for firmware for this. bepends on what drive you have.

The reason computers wont be sold regionfree is legal. Same goes for
"normal players" which from Jan 1 2002 should NOT to be sold regionfree,
but dealers just dont care.

Bugs don't die - they just go to Redmond to regroup.

Not that I can do it at the moment, but does this apply to DVDs you burn
yourself?

I've been wondering how to get PAL footage to NTSC easily and cheaply,
and was considering burning to DVD. If it depends on where I live when I
buy my Mac, I'll think again.

the region code is independent of PAL/NTSC.
you can burn your DVD with region 0 and it will run on any player.

I use my PM 6500 with the video in/out card for this. (I am prepping to
move the cards to a Performa 630 so I can leave it hooked up inline with
my VCRs)

I set the screen to 640x480, tell video player to go into full screen
mode, and to accept input from a PAL source (of course, I have a PAL vcr
to play it with).

Then I capture the video output which is NTSC to a 2nd VCR.

Makes very nice copies, and also defeats Macrovision (oops, now I can go
to jail for saying that).
