As drawing libraries goes, Cairo looks awfully nice: <http://cairographics.org/

Out of interest, whats so good about the Cairo library ?

I had no idea you could use cairo in the console. A number of the apps I
use in linux depend on it, and they all seem to work well. I believe one
of the compositing window managers uses it exclusively to handle all the
drawing of elements to the screen.

But yeah, I've never played with it beyond that.
