RealStudio 2011r3 unexpectedly quits on start up. Why?
Date: 22.09.11 17:32 (Thu, 22 Sep 2011 12:32:14 -0400)
From: Ken Winograd
Hi. I need a reminder. I've seen messages about this before but can't remember the solution. For a reason yet unknown I can't run the latest Real Studio Mac 2011r3. I had it running without problem, I worked on projects, but somehow now it "unexpectedly quits" when I open 2011r3 itself without a doc, or trying to open it with an existing doc. Something somewhere somehow got corrupted. I re-installed the app from the original DMG installer, still no good. I tried to delete various application caches in the Library folder, but still no good. Anyone seen this? Suggestions? (THANKS!)

I'd say that someone at RS would like to see the entire crash log. What I was suggesting was to open Console.app and look at the console messages. There is often useful information to be found there.

Check the console log to see if there is any information about the abrupt exit.

Also try clearing everything out from all Library/Application Support/, Library/Caches/, and Library/Preferences in both the system and user library folders - delete anything with REALbasic or com.realsoftware in the file (or directory) name. Then d/l RS2011r11 from their site, and try that. Then RS2011r3 should work; you may have to re-enter you registration info, though.

He was thinking for a time that the problem might have been related to those users that were using Mac OSX 10.6 and had Rosetta installed, but he's thinking differently now that I told him I was running the latest Mac Lion and using RS2011r3. Anyway, thank you all for your suggestions. Thank you Jason. I'm back up and running again.

Try calling Jason at REAL. He was very helpful to me...maybe he can help you too. Hi Joe and everyone else who jumped in trying to help me figure out why my Mac personal edition RealStudio 2011r3 would unexpectedly quit every time I tried to run it, with or without a document. Many of you suggested I delete this pref file or that pref file, and most of these suggestions ended up only in changing how far I was able to get before ultimately unexpectedly quitting again.

In desperation, I called Real Software today, was connected to someone named Jason (my new hero) and I'm back up and running. We "believe" (we are surely NOT sure!) that the fix was when I also deleted two folders in the user/Library/Caches folder called "com.realsoftware.feedback" and "com.realsoftware.realstudio". (An obvious guess is that the feedback folder probably had nothing to do with it but I don't know that for sure). Before running RealStudio again (to see if the deletions worked) I also deleted the more obvious Pref files (and registration files) in the Library/Preferences folder. With them all gone, I'm back up and running. THANK YOU JASON.

Sadly, this is obviously a complicated problem. Jason did NOT think it was anything that I did wrong, to which I have to agree, because I never left RealStudio when it wasn't working. I had no idea I'd have a problem the NEXT time I ran RealStudio. I always left things intact, as far as I knew. He thinks the problem is on their end, but can't yet isolate the problem. No, not really. CFRetain has a trap in it if it's called with a NULL object.

I thought I had once provided a bad prefs file that caused the crash.

(THANKS!)

Make sure you look in the Library at the root level not just the one

The license agreement I expect as that is stored in the preferences
However the rest are also stored in the preferences so I'm surprised
you see anything else

Thanks Tony. I am indeed trying to delete tons of Realbasic real studio prefs, app support, old versions and more. (all of which didn't used to matter, but I'm willing to try.) So far, still can't get things running again. If I find out what's causing the problem, I'll report back here. If anyone has had this happen and knows the fix, I hope you'll chime in! Thanks!

I had this problem when I had RB 2005-something, 2007-something and had
downloaded 2011-something. Everything was fine until in the middle of
testing 2011-something, I decided to try my code with 2007. /Then/ 2011
would crash. The list members said "remove every damn RealBasic
RealStudio file plist, license, everything of any vintage, stick it
somewhere where it can't be recognized".

Then 2011-something worked.

Very much so

I'd really love to have a nice way to reproduce this as I have seen it
a few times but can't figure out how to get my preferences file into a
state that this causes a crash

In the mean time delete your preferences (not the license) located in
~/Library/Preferences/com.realsoftware.realstudio.plist
And maybe the older preferences ~/Library/Preferences/REAL Studio
Preferences

Both are in your home directories Library/Preferences
