My WE application has been working fine all year. I have made no modifications since January. Today it inexplicably began giving people this error"

"Unable to launch application 'referralstatus' on port 14566"

I've had this error in the past due to permissions issues which were quickly resolved. But I've made no such changes. I'm in line with the Hostgator "live chat." I'm 80th in line. Just curious if anyone else is experiencing the same thing.

An FYI: this week my apps on Hostgator broke as well, but they were
very helpful. They admitted that they upgraded everyone to 64-bit and
thus broke everything. They were very fast to install the fix.
Here is a quote from their email: "Yes. The server was switched to
64bit but the 32bit libstdc++ library was not installed. I fixed this
and your sites are loading now. Please check to confirm."
However, the MySQLCommunityPlugin.so is a deal killer. Any apps I had
running that didn't incorporate SQL connectivity now work fine - but
library support for SQL dbase is off the table.

I've just gone through the TOS docs for 4 other shared providers and I suspect you'll start seeing WE apps not working on any shared account in the coming months as they fall under the realm of "compiled, unsupported 3rd party applications". They want to sell the more expensive virtual private servers or dedicated hosting plans. If you can create an app that will allow you to do almost anything on their shared offerings, the draw to the more expensive plans will be reduced. I don't know this for a fact, but it makes sense business-wise.

Looks like the parameters for hosting need to be bumped up a notch to indicate that a "A fully controllable, private server environment (virtual or dedicated) is required by most hosting providers for running WE applications."

Realsoftware should take Hostgator off of their list of recommended hosting providers.

Joe,

My suspicions would be that they installed a different version of libc++ and didn't reset the necessary symlink.

If you have ssh access to your account, check the libstdc++.so file:

ls -l /usr/lib/libstdc++*

My host indicates:

lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 19 Mar 11 04:06 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 -> libstdc++.so.6.0.13
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 942040 Dec 6 07:16 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.13

Ooops. My mistake. It's the config.cfg that I should have been uploading.

Didn't matter though. Now it errors on port 25 or 26. That wasn't the problem.

They said nothing has changed. My first thought was they moved to 64bit. That has been denied by my helpdesk person.

Unclear why the app would just die. Seems odd.

I found out there is also a separate "help-desk" lottery.

In my experience it wasn't helpful. Which calls into question whether there is, in fact, a desk.

I contacted Hostgator again yesterday morning. After 52 minutes (I have a copy of the transcript) I was finally escalated and given a ticket number. The chat wasn't that involved it just took them forever to respond. The ticket was sent in at 10:53am CDT and I haven't heard from them yet. So we're coming up on 24 hours.

> I don't know if you are aware of it but QuickStart Software is offering a WE specific hosting package

I "signed up" my email and haven't heard back. The thought of a WE specific host does appeal to me. I guess my only concern would be that it was a stable and robust host not just some guy with a few extra computers cobbled together in their basement.

I don't really have a lot of traffic and so a VPN seem like an unnecessary expense. Plus, many seem to require more babysitting than I care to engage in. I like just using CPanel and calling it a day. A basic shared host with wordpress and the ability to deploy small WE apps is all I need. And by small I mean used by a handful of users. I'm not creating public apps.
