Video Streaming in Linux

From: Kimball Larsen
I am starting a new project that has some unique requirements. I need to build an application that:
1) Runs on Ubuntu 12.04 linux
2) Connects to a webcam that is plugged in locally (a UVC capable cam, that appears as /dev/video0 on the filesystem)
3) Streams what the camera currently sees (and hears) to the screen in real time - just a monitor program.

It does not need to record the video stream, grab frames, capture stills, etc. I just need to monitor the video feed locally.

This is to be used in a medical setting, there the camera will be used to monitor the patient during treatment.

I have a test Ubunutu box all set up, with a working webcam that streams to other video chat applications etc correctly.

Does anyone know of any plugins or other techniques that I can use to achieve the above? I have a subscription to the MBS plugins, but did not see anything there that seemed to fit the bill.

Thanks!
