Seeking sugguestions for file catalog

Greetings List,
Has anyone used a plugin to catalog files on their disk?
I'm looking to use a database to store information about
files on my disk drive (MacOSX) and wondered if there was
perfered layout, ie do a record of the vRef,parId,name like FSSpec
or store the complete path, or some other OS or file level
information.
Suggestions, ideas, thoughts welcome.

Thanx in advance,
Steven

Why would that have to be a plugin?

Storing vRef is out, because it is not persistent across boots nor even
necessarily across processes in OS 10. I believe the same is true for
parID if you are not dealing with an HFS volume.

This leaves you with storing paths, or storing aliases. If you store
paths, your catalog will break for any files that are moved. Storing
aliases, on the other hand, will take up a lot more space.

For your disk, the OS has a catalog.
So where is the use and where is the problem?

performance, or system level information that would be good for a catalog,
or if you think the layout using RB functions is possible what info would use
for maintaining a catalog?

I suppose it is possible that you might get better perfomance from a plugin. But I'd sure start a project like this as a pure RB app and only switch to a plugin when I was sure there was a perfomance problem.
