Is the UUID stable? over reinstallation?

There is nothing unique on Mac and Windows, but a few things which could help.

Well, you could try a combination of various things.

Aaron,

I've run into this same problem on Windows. You are correct, cloned installs will have identical product keys. MAC address is a possibility, but if the person uses a dock or external ethernet adapter then it might not be available when they are working mobile.

The only sure way to have a unique identifier is to create one yourself and store it somewhere buried in the Windows registry.

Good luck.

For MacSerialNumber, I thought not all Macs can be guaranteed to have this? That's why I was using the UUID.

For WinProductKey, do cloned installations have unique values for this? If no, is there some other unique value? MAC address maybe?

Thanks,
Aaron

[MBS] Windows similar function to SystemInformationMBS.MacUUID ?
Date: 16.04.12 04:41 (Sun, 15 Apr 2012 23:41:43 -0400)
From: Aaron Andrew Hunt
SystemInformationMBS.MacUUID is handy for getting a unique number to link to a Mac for software installation and registration. Is there any similar function on Windows? I have been having some problems with my current methods for software registration on Windows and this is really the thing I am lacking. If there isn't a similar function, is there any unique identifier which can be linked to a Windows system that will not keep breaking when Windows updates itself?

Thanks!
Aaron

That is the code on your Windows CD which you enter on installation.

no

I would use MacSerialNumber on Mac and WinProductKey on Windows.

What is WinProductKey actually doing? Each time I run it on a Windows VM, it
returns the same number. How is this number generated? Does it change on
hardware changes? If yes, which components are tested? I did not find
information on this in the online docu.
